Q: I make a promise to Allah that if something happens, I'll do something in return. Then if I fulfill the promise before the event occurs, is it valid or after the event I have to redo the promise?

A:
It should be redone after the desired result is seen.

And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Q: A person has not gone for Hajj yet because of following reason and is looking for practical advice to see if he can perform it: He has to urinate every 45 minutes. How can he perform Hajj in above situation considering the long lines for washrooms and also because of many hours of traveling because of slow movement of traffic? Any practical advice? Is above a valid excuse for not going for Hajj?

A:
In our understanding this is not an excuse for him leaving out the hajj. He may put on a diaper as a precautionary measure.

And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Q: Can two people do one sheep for nafl qurbani? Would it be okay for several persons to jointly sponsor a Qurbaani for a deceased without making one single person the owner?

A:
There is a difference of opinion amongst our Ulama regarding this masalah.

In our understanding as long as each of them have done their Wajib Qurbani they could jointly make a Nafl Qurbani on behalf of the marhoomeen etc.

Q: Someone gives me R500 to slaughter one sheep as Qurbani worth that much and give it to prisoners. In my list I have sheep worth different values so I select one worth R500 and put it on his name. Now if that particular sheep dies, do I have to replace it for him or he has to pay for another one?

A:
If this Qurbani was a Waajib (compulsory) Qurbani of this person then:

a) If the person is wealthy (i.e. owner of Nisaab) then it will be compulsory on him to slaughter another animal.
b) If the person is not wealthy then it will not be compulsory upon him to slaughter another animal.

And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Q: Would cupping break wudu according to the opinion in the Hanafi Mathab that ikhraaj (removal) of blood will not break wudu and it must flow on its own?

A
: Cupping involves making incisions on the skin which results in blood flowing. Hence, the wudhu will break.

And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Q: If you take over a business, do you have to honour all existing contracts even if not economically feasible?

A:
It is difficult for us to comment without investigating the full nature of the contract. If one had only purchased the stock and not the registered trading name and company etc. then it is obvious that there is no need to honour the contracts as they are not related to the mere sale of the stock. However, if the entire running entity was sold and there was no clear exclusion of the outstanding contracts and debts then those contract that are not against the Shariah would have to be honored. One should ascertain such matters before the transaction so that one may structure the purchase in the most appropriate manner.

And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Q: The commonly know ruling regarding the suitability of a sheep for Qurbani is that it should be a year old or 6 months old and resemble a 1 year old. It is now very common that sheep are raised using a modern "feedlot" system that courses rapit growth. A 4 month old Lamb can weigh more than 55 kgs while an average 1 year old grass fed sheep weighs about 51 kgs. I should mention that most Marino sheep and cows in South Africa are raised in Feedlots. Is it suitable to use a lamb for Qurbani that is large because of its diet in the feedlot but is younger than 6 months old?

A:
No.

It is necessary for the sheep to be at least 6 months old.

And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best
