Home Articles Islam Guy Fawkes Day

According to Islam
For ages gone by, the 5th of November was a night in which the sky becomes illuminated with an array of colours, ears are deafened by the great magnitude of sounds and the streets are blackened by the burning of tyres.
• Where do these practices originate from?
• Why the 5th of November?
• Why the burning of fireworks, crackers and tyres?

Guy Fawkes was an English conspirator of Roman Catholic ideologies. He was implicated in the GunpowderPlot to blow up the British Parliament as a protest against anti-Roman Catholic laws. On the night of November 4-5, 1605, he was caught in a cellar underneath the House of Lords and arrested. He together with his accomplices were hanged.

Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated on November 5 in the United Kingdom and some other parts of the British Commonwealth with bonfires and fireworks. (Adapted from Encarta Encyclopaedia)

AS MUSLIMS WHAT DOES OUR RELIGION TELL US:
Allah Ta’aala has mentioned: “Whoever seeks a religion (way of life) other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him and he will be from the loses in the Hereafter.” (Surah Al-e-Imraan V.85)

Nabi (Sallallaahu alaihi wa Sallam) has mentioned: “Whoever imitates a nation so he is from amongst them” (Abu Dawood) It is clear from this verse of the Qur’aan and narration that there is no room for such practices in the religion of Islam. This a practice of the Christians commemorating some action of a fellow Christian. We as the followers of Islam have no relation whatsoever to these practices and joining the Kuffaar in these celebrations is tantamount to joining them in an un-Islamic practice.

THE WASTING OF WEALTH
The burning of fireworks and crackers entails the wasting of money on a large scale. Thousands of rands are burnt up for a few minutes of delight and pleasure. Let us ponder over how many people are suffering from poverty and starvation yet we are prepared to send our money up in smoke despite their hardship. On the day of Judgement we will be questioned regarding the wealth we have earned and how we have spent it. Imagine what our condition will be if we spent this wealth in forbidden avenues. May Allah Ta’aala save us. آمين . Allah Ta’aala has mentioned: “And do not waste by extravagance, certainly He does not love the wasteful” (Surah Al An’am V.141)

THE HARMING OF ANIMALS
During this period of Guy Fawkes, the animals suffer a great deal. The loud bangs filling the air causes severe distress and fear in them resulting in their running wild and even being run over. We should ponder over the fact that these are the creations of Allah Ta’aala, showing mercy to them will gain us mercy from the side of Allah Ta’aala. These innocent animals are sometimes also used as objects of the fireworks display, inflicting tremendous injury to them. Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wa Sallam) has mentioned: “A woman has been punished Regarding a cat which she kept imprisoned until it died. She has entered the fire regarding it. She did not feed it and neither give it water to drink when she restrained it and neither did she leave it to eat from the insects of the earth.” (Bukhari) The prohibition of causing harm to the creation of Allah Ta’aala is evident from the above narration.

Therefore we urge all Muslims to refrain from supporting the Kuffaar in these celebrations of theirs. Let us uphold our identity as followers of the Deen of Islam! May Allah Ta’aala guide and protect us, آمين
