Q: Is it permissible to read WhatsApp messages in the toilet?

A: One should abstain from using the mobile phone in the toilet, as reading and talking in the toilet are against the Islamic ettiquettes of using the toilet. [ Hashiyatut Thahtaw 54]

Furthermore, these days, Islamic content is also circulated on WhatsApp and social media. By reading messages in the the toilet, there is a possibility that the name of Allah, verses of the Quraan, Ahadith, etc may be exposed in the toilet, which is prohibited.

Q: Is it permissible to recite Qiraat loudly in Nafl and Sunnah Salaah?

A: With regards to the Sunnan and Nawafil of the night, one has a choice between reading loudly or softly. As for the Sunnan and Nawafil that are performed during the day, one should recite softly. {Aap Ke Masa'il 3: 71}

Q: Is it permissible for an employee to read personal WhatsApp and social media messages during work hours?

A: If an employee has completed his tasks and is sitting idle, then it will be permissible to read personal messages. However, if an employee has not fulfilled his allocated tasks or reading messages disturbs his work, then it will not be permissible to read personal messages.

The employer is paying the employee for his time, hence, the employee is obliged to dedicate his time, entirely, to his employer. (Aap Ke Masa'il)

Q: When making Wudhu, should one wash the beard or make Masah of the beard?

A: If one has a sparse beard i.e. the skin below the beard is visible, it will be necessary for water to reach the facial skin. So the beard together with facial hair will be washed.

On the other hand, if one has a dense beard, then one will make Khilaal of the beard. [Radul Muhthaar Vol 1 Page 117]

The correct method of making Khilaal of the beard is: the fingers of the right hand (with the back of the palm touching the neck) should be entered into the beard below the chin. Khilaal will start from the roots of the beard hairs, moving towards its tips.

Thereafter, Khilaal will be done of the right side of the beard, followed by the left side. [Fatawaa Mahmoodiya V5/P50]

Q: In Sajdah, should a male’s heels be kept together or apart?

A: To join the heels in Sajdah is Sunnah. [Raddul-Muhtâr Vol, 1 Pg, 493]
